Latest Update

(In a continued effort to keep my Livejournal in sync with my personal blog....)

Since benprime asked, here's a quick update on the (slowly) healing leg. At last discussion, the fracture has healed completely, and now it just remains to rebuild all of the muscles in my right leg, apparently.

Of course, the recommended method to achieve this is Physical Therapy. Since I switched insurance as of July 1st, this has been a fairly difficult process to get started with.

However, I have finally met my new PCP (Primary Care Physician) in the cattle run they call the Kaiser Permanente HMO, and he has referred me to their PT deparment. Now it remains to be seen how long it will take me to call them and set up an appointment.

In the meantime, I am engaging in this strenuous and painful list of exercises on my own: walking around.

As a side note, considering the abuse we've received from them, in general, I'm not sure I'd even tap on the brakes for a squirrel, let alone slam on them....

Baaaaah.

You scored as Cultural Creative. Cultural Creatives are probably the newest group to enter this realm. You are a modern thinker who tends to shy away from organized religion but still feels as if there is something greater than ourselves. You are very spiritual, even if you are not religious. Life has a meaning outside of the rational.

Latest Orthopedist Appointment, on Friday

I'd have to say it went pretty well. I appear to be healing just fine, and have not displaced the fracture, which would have probably required surgery to put in plates, and pins, and such. I wasn't fond of that idea, and I'm pleased to hear that it will not be necessary.

I have also been liberated, finally from the straight brace that has held my leg hostage for the last month. I am, though, now in a brace with a hinge that allows me to bend it. It's something, anyway. I'm also allowed to take it off to sleep, now, which is new. It's very strange, after 4 weeks in the other one, I appear to have gotten fairly used to it.

Unsurprisingly, it's also quite sore today. I pretty much expected this. I was told to basically work on rebuilding the gait of my right leg, concentrating on the heel-toe kinda action which is natural to a regular walk (not that fancy walkin'). Needless to say, this gave pretty much everything in the leg more of a workout than it's had in a month. Ouch.

Another bonus, I should be able to drive pretty safely this week, assuming I'm fiendishly careful, and don't get into a situation where I have to slam hard on the brakes. This, it seems, could go ahead and displace the fracture, going back to a position requiring surgery. Again, since I'm against this possibility, I'll be driving pretty damn cautiously. Thus, if you see a big ugly maroon Aztek going pretty slow on some back road, gimme some space, will ya? I got a broken leg here!

The things I miss the most....

...with my leg broken, i'm discovering a surprising number of things that I've really taken for granted. It's also surprising that a number of the things I really miss are things I either didn't much care for, or think much about, before I ended up in a leg brace. This list includes, but isn't limited to:

o Going for walks with my wife.
o Crossing my legs.
o Actually going to work, to be around my co-workers.
o Being able to sleep in most any position I might want, and being able to adjust my covers easily with my feet.
o Doing craft shows with my wife.
o Being able to drive myself whereever I might want to go.
o Having things to do that don't involve computers.
o Making pens.
o Riding my motorcycle.

Yeah, I think it's safe to say that I'm going to have a fairly different perspective on many of the things in my life once I'm (relatively) healed. This may be quite a beneficial side-effect of this interruption in my life. To be perfectly honest with the universe, though, I wish we could have found a less disruptive way to get the message through.

Broken leg.

Since I find myself making more comments on the Livejournal of some of my friends who use it as a way to stay connected, I thought I'd throw up a quick note here about my situtation.

In short, I broke my leg, and am stuck at home a LOT lately.
